Pedro sat up gingerly, pressing the heel of his hand to his forehead in an effort to quiet the pounding there. This would be the last time he let Benedick and Beatrice talk him into having “just one glass” as a celebratory nightcap. Granted, after finishing the home office two weeks ago and the three closets this weekend, they’d finally painted everything that needed it, so it was a worthy celebration, but still.

He would blame the wine.

There had been a lot of wine. It would make a good scapegoat.

He squinted and looked around the darkened room. It took him longer than it should’ve to realize he was not in his own bed. It took him even longer to realize he was in Benedick and Beatrice’s bed. With Benedick and Beatrice.

And, he noted, he was wearing remarkably less clothing than he should be in this situation. Zero clothing, in fact.

Hell.

He was definitely blaming the wine.

Pedro scanned the room for his clothes, but it was nearly impossible to see anything with the curtains drawn so tight. The light around the edges told him it was morning, but it wasn’t enough to see by or to gauge the time. He cautiously eased out of the bed, feeling at the floor with his bare foot to make sure he didn’t step on anything, trying not to make a sound. Benedick and Beatrice seemed to be asleep, and he wanted to keep them that way.

He found his phone on the dresser, battery dead, and he groped around the piles of clothing on the floor looking for his underwear. Hell, even just his pants would do. He could come back for the rest later.

His foot landed on something sharp; he fell to the ground with a muffled curse and a very loud thump.

Benedick and Beatrice both sat up in bed, Benedick swearing like a sailor while Beatrice flipped on the lamp. Pedro covered his eyes at the sudden light, which sent his headache skyrocketing.

“Pedro?” Benedick’s voice was thick. “What the hell are you doing on the floor?”

Pedro was grateful the heat on his cheeks wouldn’t be visible. “Tripping.” He searched for what he’d stepped on and grabbed the offending object: a shoe. “Over Beatrice’s stiletto, apparently.”

Beatrice winced. “Sorry about that. I wasn’t thinking about where those were landing.”

A dim memory of the shoes getting flung across the room surfaced, and Pedro’s cheeks heated further.

“What are you doing stumbling around in the dark, anyway?” she asked. “You could’ve turned on a light.”

“You were both asleep,” Pedro said. “I didn’t want to disturb you.”

Benedick scrubbed a hand over his face, his blond hair sticking up every which way. “Ah, hell, it’s too early for this.”

Beatrice peered at her phone. “It’s nearly ten.
